Immigration & Travel

If you emigrated here, you’ve either learned or are learning that immigration is an extremely confusing and tricky process.

After coming to Chicago for months at a time on a visitor’s visa, I came for the last time in December 1998 on a visitor’s visa and married my wife (christ this needs to be updated…) in February of 1999. I did not obtain a fiancĂ© visa. We quickly learned that the process is not as easy as in the movies. It was months before I was granted a work permit, and two and a half years before finally receiving my Green Card. We tried the process on our own at first, but after getting no where and losing a lot of money to fees, we eventually found a lawyer who was a friend of the family willing to help us without charge.

However with all of the changes in the immigration system in recent years I really would not recommend going solo on navigating the process, I would highly recommend that you get good and accurate legal advice.
